As you probably already know, the Berkshires is an area that has an important place in American History. The Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum is a great reminder of the early days of the region’s development and worth a visit during your time at the Gateways Inn. Combining several decades worth of railroad history with restored trains and equipment, the museum takes you back in time and through the past and into the present. During your visit to Lenox, MA be sure to make a little time to visit the Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum.
Lenox Station is home to the Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum and first served the Housatonic Railroad before it was once the designated New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad station for the region. The original 1850 station burned to the ground in 1902 and was rebuilt later that same year. During the late 19th century, the station brought in Gilded Age “cottagers” in to their lavish Berkshire summer homes. In addition to the museum and special exhibits, the Lenox Station has a Museum Store offering souvenirs, books, toys, and more. Other historic stations in the area include the Yokun Block Station, Lee Station and Stockbridge station.
After you’ve taken in the sights at the museum, you can take a guided rail yard tour. The tour includes looks at authentic rail cars and train components. The New Haven caboose is a popular attraction and you can climb up into the cupola of the caboose and experience what it was like to be on a freight crew.
Other points of interest include a wooden baggage car from the 1890s and the engine component of a vintage diesel-electric switcher. Examples of American diesel electric locomotives, passenger cars and other equipment are plentiful in the Lenox Station rail yard.
If you want to have a truly unique day at the Berkshire Scenic Railroad Museum, you may want to take on the Locomotive Experience. Learn about life on the railroad as you operate a diesel-electric locomotive. The day begins with an instructional session at Lenox Station where you’ll learn the basic operating rules and safety guidelines. Then, after a lunch break, participants get hands on as they learn how to do pre-start tests, start the locomotive, and couple the locomotives with coaches. The experience is completed by when the participants operate the locomotive with the coach like an old fashioned engineer! The 2014 Locomotive Experience is available by reservation only.
