The Berkshires are so full of history and culture that it’s no wonder that the area is a treasure trove for theatre lovers. Berkshire theatre has something to offer everyone, from Shakespearean classics, to musical favorites, to new productions, and everything in between. When you stay at the Gateways Inn, you’ll be minutes away from great theatre, and we’re always more than happy to give you some recommendations, but to get you started, here are some of your Berkshire theatre options.
The Williamstown Theatre Festival has been bringing first-class theatrical performances to the Berkshires since 1955. Great actors, directors, designers, producers, and playwrights come from around the nation to be a part of the festival. This year’s festival includes productions such as A Great Wilderness, June Moon, Living On Love, Fool For Love, The Visit, The Old Man and the Old Moon, and Robin Hood.
Shakespeare & Company is truly an integral part of the Berkshire theatre scene. In addition to a fantastic season of Shakespearean masterpieces and other quality performances, Shakespeare & Company provides world-class training for actors and innovative programs for young people in the community. The Gateways Inn is proud to have a special relationship with Shakespeare & Company and invite you to take in a show or two to find out why the company is such a Berkshires institution.
The Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield is another example of great Berkshire theatre. Since its foundation in 1995, Barrington Stage Company has produced several award winning plays and musicals to the delight of audiences. The Tony Award winning play The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was developed and produced at Barrington Stage Company before becoming a resounding success on Broadway. This season includes productions such as Kiss Me, Kate, The Other Place, Dancing Lessons, An Enemy of the People, Breaking the Code, The Golem of Havana, and more.
This theatrical gem may technically be one of the newer kids on the block as far as Berkshire theatre is concerned, but when you look closely, you’ll realize that it has a rich legacy. Berkshire Theatre Group was formed in 2010 when the Berkshire Theatre Festival combined with the Colonial Theatre. These two theatre programs had been integral parts of the Berkshires cultural scene from as far back as the early 1900s. The Berkshire Theatre Group takes the tradition of both of these campuses and presents a wonderful schedule of shows. This season’s offerings include A Little Night Music, The Mystery of Irma Vep: A Penny Dreadful, Benafactors, Cedars, Suessical the Musical, and A Hatful of Rain.
