What You Need to Know About the 13th Annual Berkshires Arts Festival

Berkshires Arts FestivalDuring your time with us at the Gateways Inn, you’ll discover that the Berkshires are not only a place full of natural beauty, but also a region with fantastic arts and culture. From Tanglewood’s legendary summer concerts, to the number of historical sites and art galleries, the Berkshires have something for all visitors. Though there are enriching activities and events to enjoy year round, during the summer, the Berkshires Arts Festival provides a great opportunity to browse the wares of some of the best artisans in the country.

The Berkshires Arts Festival is celebrating its 13th year this summer. This year’s festival will take place July 4th-6th at Ski Butternut in nearby Great Barrington. The annual celebration brings thousands of visitors to enjoy theater, art, dance, and music.

Now a Berkshires tradition, the Berkshires Arts Festival was started by American Art Marketing, a marketing and event production company “dedicated to advancing the livelihood of artists and artisans.” So, when you support the Berkshires Arts Festival, you’re also supporting the careers of independent artists, which is something woven into the spirit of our area. The Berkshires celebration is one of five yearly trademark exhibitions held along the east coast. They also have an affiliate company, An American Craftsman Galleries with locations in New York City, Stockbridge, MA and Savannah, GA.

At the Berkshires Arts Festival, great artists display and sell artwork in a large variety of mediums. Attendees can expect to find amazing art for home décor, jewelry, pottery, woodwork and much more. The festival is also a celebration of music and theater so you might catch a few live performances during your time there.

This year’s artists include participants from all over the US and Canada. Categories for artists are: ceramics, drawing, decorative fiber arts, wearable fiber arts, furniture, glass, jewelry, (including, may we brag? – our favorite designer Nicky Ruxton – who just happens to be innkeeper Michele’s sister) leather, metalwork, mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture, and woodwork.

And while you’re in town for the festival, you should make time to enjoy some other summer attractions in the area. Shakespeare & Company is presenting an amazing schedule of performances from May to August, including a special version of Romeo and Juliet at The Mount. And the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival will be showcasing the finest dance performances all summer from June until August. And of course, Tanglewood has a spectacular summer season planned this year, including what promise to be fabulous concerts by James Taylor and Tony Bennett starting and ending the season, respectively. There truly is something to please everyone in the Berkshires during the summer.
